Remembering Michael ‘Big Lad’ Shaw

Writer's picture: Connie HoughConnie Hough

1979 – 2024

We celebrate the life of Michael ‘Big Lad’ Shaw, a cherished past member and lifelong

friend of our society. Michael joined us in 1987 and graced several shows, including ‘The

King and I’, ‘Anything Goes’, and ‘The Revenge of Sherlock Holmes’. However, his true

passion lay behind the scenes, where he dedicated many years to hanging lights, setting up

cloths, and building sets.

In 1997, Michael moved to London and pursued a degree in Stage Management at the

Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His career flourished at prestigious venues like the

London Palladium and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where he served as Master

Carpenter on numerous productions, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sound of Music,

Sister Act, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the outstanding 42nd Street, and more

recently, Frozen.

Despite his busy career, Michael always found time to bring his magic and humour back to

Stourbridge Operatic whenever needed. He will be deeply missed, and we extend our love

and thoughts to his family.
